By Lynn Ponder: Amigas Latinas let me please introduce you to a non-profit organization: National Conference of Puerto Rican Women in Miami since 1977 although the organization was founded in Washington, D.C. in 1972. The first official meeting was held in January 1978 and the First Board of Directors was installed, presided by Alicia S. Baro. One hundred and seventy five women were present constituting the first chapter membership.
In this first official meeting this group of Puerto Rican women met in Washington D.C. and made a commitment to support the rights of women. This historic moment marked the birth of the National Conference of Puerto Rican Women (NACOPRW) which promotes the full participation of Puerto Rican and other Hispanic women in their economic, social and political life in the United States and Puerto Rico. Through the years NACOPRW has been recognized for its involvement in the community and efforts on women’s rights.
As the world celebrates Women’s History Month, NACOPRW would like to invite you to share with the pioneer and leader of this organization with a special event: Dr. Alica Baro Achievement Awards Night celebration. To be held on Saturday, March 31, 2012 from 5 to 10pm, at The Renaissance Ballroom, 5910 SW 8th Street, Miami, FL 33144.
Dr. Alicia Baro is an icon in the Puerto Rian Community: The Mother of Wynwwod who has dedicated her life to ensuring the rights of Hispanics, Women and other minorities in political representation, health, education and employment. She has been recognized with awards such as Florida Women’s Hall of Fame, Herald Spirit of Excellence Award, Woman of Impact, Miami-Dade Mayor’s Pioneer Award and Distinguished Service Award given by our Florida Congressional Leader among others.
To give this event an extra colorful flavor NACOPRW, President Miami Chapter, Elizabeth Erazo Baez invites you to celebrate with patriotic colors: Women will be wearing Red and/or White. Men will be wearing navy blue and white so pick out “el outfit” y a fiestar se ha dicho!
