#1 Women’s Killer = Heart Disease

By Lynn Ponder: February is all about falling and being in love right? No, wrong it is American Heart Month dedicated to raising awareness about Heart Disease and increase knowledge about prevention. Did you know that heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States..Ay Bendito!

In a conference call with Dra. Cristina Rabadán-Diehl and Jeannette Torres I learned that an astonishing 80 percent of women ages 40 to 60 have one or more risk factor for heart disease. One in four women in the United States dies of heart disease, while one in 30 dies of breast cancer. The good news is that it is preventable by making healthy lifestyle changes and taking steps to manage risk factors, women can reduce their risk for heart disease ☺

More good news: “Awareness about heart disease in women as the main cause of death has been seen to have increased substantially, and we are very happy with the Institute, particularly among African American and Hispanic women” said Dra. Cristina Rabadán-Diehl

The national heart disease awareness campaign for women, The Heart Truth is sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

The centerpiece of The Heart Truth is the Red Dress, which was introduced as the national symbol for women and heart disease awareness in 2002 by the NHLBI. The Red Dress reminds women of the need to protect their heart health, and inspires them to take action.
