By Lynn Ponder: I started February informing you about the Heart Truth Campaign and as this month comes to an end, I want you to know about Siempre Mujer Magazine partnership with Macy’s and the American Heart Association to create awareness in the Latino community about heart disease prevention. This post will serve as a reminder of the importance to raise awareness about Heart Disease among all our women friends. We need to continue to inform our communities that heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States.
The good news is that there are ways to prevent heart disease by making healthy lifestyle choices. Please pay attention to the following prevention tips to get on track to better heart health:
1- Exercise minimum 3 days a week for at least 30 minutes a day
2- Keep a healthy weight
3- Prevent high blood pressure by reducing sodium intake
4- Keep a healthy diet
5- Get tested to know total cholesterol levels
6- STOP smoking
In commemoration of National Wear Red Day, the American Heart Association, Macy’s and Siempre Mujer celebrated together with Find Your Red shopping parties at Macy’s stores, where women all over the country were able to purchase red clothing and accessories, while learning more about the Go Red for Women campaign. We were invited to this event and thought it was a creative fun way to get the attention of Latinas.
María Cristina Marrero, Editor-in-Chief of Siempre Mujer magazine, stated that “As a Latina, and knowing that Hispanic women in the United States are 30% more likely to be overweight than non-Hispanic women – which is a terrifying number if you take into account that being overweight is one of the main causes of heart disease – it was important for me to support this cause. I am delighted to be able to participate in the Find Your Red shopping parties at Macy’s during such an important year when the National Wear Red Day campaign celebrates its 10th anniversary. I find it unacceptable that 1 out of every 3 adult Hispanic women is classified as obese. Something needs to be done about it and I’m proud that the American Heart Association, Macy’s and Siempre Mujer share the same mission.”
The goal of Siempre Mujer’s partnership is to create awareness in the Latino community about the importance of heart disease prevention. Macy’s & AHA have launched the Find Your Red campaign, which encourages women to wear red with style and creativity while promoting the importance of a healthy heart.
