Connecting online evolves into great opportunity!

Hello!!! My name is Jacquelyn Gomez and I am delighted to share that I just graduated from the University of Houston majoring in Public Relations and minoring in Spanish and Business. I am extremely proud to be a Latina because Latinas are unstoppable and I consider myself to be one. I love fashion, traveling, meeting new people, writing, and helping others! I did it!!! Class of 2016 | University of Houston As a PR major, I understand the importance of social media in our society. I have made great connections through social media, and one of those was connecting with Lynn Ponder, founder of Web City Girls, after noticing her promotional efforts with a brand and many artists including Prince Royce. Once I was in Miami during vacation, I saw through her Twitter account that we were both attending the Colombian Festival in Downtown Miami. We immediately bonded and enjoyed the event together. Truly, meeting Lynn in person allowed me to see how much she has done for the community and how social media is more than just a virtual outlet. Lynn Ponder and Jacquelyn Gómez in Miami Social media is powerful in joining our communities, strengthening bonds, and helping good causes. From personal experience, social media has helped me engage more in my Houstonian community when I had the opportunity to start my own pageant during my last college semester in Fall 2016 to raise funds for scholarships. The event was conducted at the University of Houston on December 11th, 2016, while having Telemundo Houston as media sponsor. I loved seeing how the audience enjoyed Eleo and JKing’s performance of their newest Spanish single, while Manny D also performed his latest hits. Also, bachata sensation Alex Wayne released his new single “Ven a Mi.” I believe that social media gives everyone an opportunity to communicate, no matter what part of the world they are in. I could see this through the pageant’s Facebook pageant receiving engagement within the US and in Latin America, through the contestants’ families who were able to support their relatives online. I am beyond excited and grateful with Web City Girls to be a part of the #UnstoppableLatinas Leadership Summit 2017 team. #BeNumberless Inspires Me

At the end of March this year just before my birthday I came across a live video of Maria Marin where Lynn Ponder was a special guest that day. In that episode Lynn Ponder mentioned the #Secret that she was going to reveal on April 7. The #Secret caught my attention because it made me think of the movie The Secret and the Law of Attraction which I have been studying for many years. Her pink wig and the #Secret led me to find out more about Lynn Ponder and follow WebCityGirls, not only on Facebook but on Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat too. When I saw that Gaby Espino was supporting Lynn Ponder and the #Secret, I was interested even more because Gaby Espino is a beautiful woman that I admire a lot. April 7 arrived and when I discovered that the #Secret was about a concept called #BeNumberless, I felt very inspired and identified with the movement because even though I have a young spirit and feel that my life is just beginning, I realized that as time passes people begin to judge you by your age. Once you reach a certain age they look at you differently, they put you in a square box and have expectations of you based on the opinion of others, and that’s when I began to hide my age. #BeNumberless inspires me because I believe that no one should be judged by their age or their weight, or any other number that can be attributed. We all came into this world with talent and a purpose in life that goes beyond a number. Let me share a dream called Another Mind Magazine which came from an idea I had 13 years ago when seeking to help other people like me to find their own identity. But it was not until 10 years later that I was able to see my idea take shape with the help of friend Vinicio Henriquez Photographer when together we created the concept of what this magazine is today. We are two people of different generations united with a common purpose, and it was the need to overcome the stigma of being either too old or too young that led us to seek an alternative way of overcoming our obstacles while helping others. As we noticed how society tends to limit people’s job opportunities based on one’s age. And now that my daughters are already becoming young ladies, I feel the need to pave the way and contribute to society by creating a place where I can give them and other young people the tools to see that they have other...

#SerSinNumero Me Inspira

#BeNumberless is an Attitude

It is not easy to be an immigrant, not at all. And the “older” we are when we migrate, the more difficult it gets. My name is Claudia LaRue and I discovered webcitygirls MOVEMENT #BeNumberless on Facebook. I have been living in the United States for several years, and the truth is that this move has been quite challenging. Without a doubt, when trying to enter the labor market, this is when we become aware of the biases that exist when a person over 35 years old applies for a job. In her book Unfinished Business, Anne-Marie Slaughter advocates a cultural shift in which the professional experience women gain over the years is better valued. Ms. Slaughter proposes that women with grown children have a lot more time to invest in their careers. As an example, she cites Hillary Clinton, who has a long professional history and the necessary time to dedicate it to serving her country. Without a doubt, experience cannot be improvised. I support the #BeNumberless Movement because it seeks to lay aside biases, so that we can focus on people. There is a lot of talk these days about “personal brands.” Now that I am building my personal brand, I am focusing in what I am, in what I want to accomplish and what I want my contribution to this world to be. And I will not be a number. This attitude has filled me with optimism, and I am convinced that this will keep opening doors for me. This does not mean that we will be making ourselves younger, or to pretend to be what we are not. It means that will not let ourselves be trapped, limited or defined by a number. We are more than that, much more. I am numberless because I am worth much more! And now is the time for society to realize this....
